Amanda Smith Bingham
b. 1969 Boston, MA. Lives and works in Peacedale, Rhode Island.
Received B.F.A. from School of the Museum of Fine Arts and Tufts University, 1992. She studied documentary photography, drawing and sculpture. After working as a documentary photographer in Australia and Argentina, she attended the Rhode Island School of Design for post-graduate studies in archival acrylic mediums.
Amanda’s work has been shown at the Howard Yezerski Gallery, Boston; the Museum School’s Grossman Gallery, Gallery Equus, Boston, The Boston Public Library and the Lake Forest College Chapel Gallery, Lake Forest, IL. Her works are held in private collections in New England, Chicago-land, Los Angeles and London.
Matthew Bishop of The Economist Magazine remarked of her latest work Visual Sound Bytes, “Her paintings are saturated and heavily textured improvisations… filled with figure and fantastic creature, participating in or observing landscapes imagined and remembered. There is a distracted complexity to Amanda’s work... an unapologetic honesty that prevails.”
I often start with a recognizable form as a foundation and point of departure. My pictures are abstract often autobiographical storyboards. I want to share the daily swirl of parenting, marriage, domestic expectations, and the accelerated bombardment of disposable information that finds us…always. I paint myself into a center of calm, ultimately exposing what is true.
